SR&ED - Scientific Research & Experimental Development

The SR&ED program is a large Federal Tax Incentive program, administered by the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) that encourages Canadian businesses of all sizes and in all sectors to become more innovative and promotes companies to conduct Research and Development (R&D) in their organizations.

It is the largest single source of Federal government support for industrial R&D and is also supported by most Provincial governments.

The SR&ED program provides cash refunds and/or tax credits for expenditures on eligible R&D work done in Canada.

SR&ED Criteria
To qualify for the SR&ED program, work must advance the understanding of scientific relations or technologies, address scientific or technological uncertainty, and incorporate a systematic investigation by qualified personnel.

Common Mistake
In our experience, far too many Canadian companies either take no action to obtain their eligible SR&ED Tax Credits because they do not believe what they are doing qualifies, or fail to appropriate adequate resources to the determination of eligible projects due to time or resource constraints. In many of these cases, The Horizon Group has been able to demonstrate that the work performed does qualify, and that a tax refund/credit is available.
